Maria Surducan (n. 1985) works as an illustrator and comics book author from her studio in Cluj-Napoca, Romania.

She believes images are an imprecise way of translating reality, and that makes them more accurate than words.

Maria thinks comics are an amazing storytelling tool, and has published several graphic albums, in French, Romanian and Hungarian. Her favourite subjects are Eastern European myths and folk tales and the ways in which they can be reshaped for new generations. Her works received the 2020 Alfabéta Award from the Hungarian Comics Association and the 2021 Vladimir Colin SF-Fantasy Award. She was selected for the 2021 Comic Art Europe grant, and for the 2023 Helen M. Salzberg residency at the Jaffe Center for Book Arts, Florida.

She has also worked on advertising projects, for a long list of clients including Milka, Sprite, Vodafone, Almette, Untold, Jazz in the Park, Cognac European Literature Festival and the Goethe Institute.

Maria has illustrated several picture books and board games and regularly creates editorial illustrations. Her work was selected for the 65 Society of Illustrators Annual Exhibition and long listed for The Folio Society Award 2023.

She speaks English, French, Romanian and a bit of German.
