Flyers of Gy
This illustration has been longlisted for The Folio Society Award 2023! I loved this year’s text, Ursula Le Guin’s Flyers of Gy – because it changes its meaning depending on the reader. Maybe it really is a story about an alien race ostracizing those who grow wings, or maybe wings are a metaphor (for creativity, or queerness, or disability? …but nothing fits perfectly). Maybe it’s a dilemma where there are no “right” choices, but there are “”authentic” ones? Maybe the thing you take away from the story is the question ”what would you choose”, and the knowledge that any choice would require sacrifice.
