Visual Playground – Day4
The fourth day was Lettering Day with Tobias Hall. I must admit I was dreading this a bit – I am an amateur, mostly because I lack the patience needed for measuring and kerning properly.
We did a series of exercises, like writing the word ”Majesty” majestically…
…playing around with the pen-brush…
…writing out expressions as visual compositions…
…doing antique letters – this was the only time when we had to measure things. To my surprise, this was the exercise I enjoyed the most, and likely the one I’ll be using for future projects.
We also had to devise our own logo.Things I learned: I’m not joking about loving the antique letters. I remembered all the exercises we did in high-school (I should also talk about this sometime, because taking part in Visual Playground has renewed my admiration for my then graphic design teacher, Maria Sârbu), but this time around I am not scared of rulers and compasses and also, Tobias taught us that we can go freestyle when we feel like it. Seeing him draw together with us (albeit much faster) was very motivational.
